With 'Friends' like these, 'Joey' is headed for stardom

The new NBC sitcom gets added energy from Drea de Matteo as the equally dim, acid-tongued sister
T here are few guarantees in life, save perhaps the ones involving death, taxes and the inevitable destruction of the entire universe. On a more cheerful note, however, is this one: NBC's "Joey" is going to be a hit.
Not because the new sitcom is a strikingly innovative show. Not because it's hilariously funny, deeply touching and brilliantly acted. No. On network TV, that stuff doesn't really matter.
What does matter is this: "Joey" is a spinoff from the massive hit "Friends," starring Matt LeBlanc in the role of his "Friends" character, Joey Tribbiani. It's produced and written by the same people who worked on "Friends," and it has the old "Friends" time slot on Thursday night. ... Read More ...

TV REVIEW: 'Joey' is freshest network comedy in years
|
We may have lost our "Friends," but we've still got a pal in "Joey." The highly anticipated spin-off, which debuts on Thursday (8 p.m., NBC), is the best new comedy of the fall TV season. It gives us hope that the sitcom genre is not dead yet.
And it owes some of its best qualities to "Frasier" - more so than "Friends." ... Read More ...

Not your average ‘Joey’: ‘Friends’ spin-off is all about character
|
There doesn’t seem to be a particular formula or key to making a successful spin-off. It’s a question of character, or should I say characters. For every “Frasier” and “The Jeffersons," there is a “Joanie Loves Chachi.” If the audience connects with the characters, the show will be a hit, if not, your spinoff will spin off into oblivion. That is why “Joey” will succeed as a spinoff. Goodness knows, Joey is a character. ... Read More ...

Matt LeBlanc Dishes Joey
|
Did America love Joey Tribbiani for who he was or just for the company he kept over the past decade? Matt LeBlanc, the star of Joey, will get the answer to that question this fall, when his Friends spin-off attempts to become NBC's next Frasier by staying as popular as the hit that spawned it. Here, the 37-year-old LeBlanc mulls over his future prospects.
TV Guide Online: Is it asking too much for an intellectually challenged fellow like Joey to anchor an entire show? Matt LeBlanc: Everybody says something stupid at least once a day. With me, it's probably more than that. So I think people will still be able to identify with him. ... Read More ...
