L.A. Story - Joey

We all knew it was coming. Since even before Friends bid us adieu last May, the ads — and expectations — were flying for Matt LeBlanc's spin-off. Could he carry on in L.A. without Rachel and Ross? Would we be there for him even though the Bings weren't? And how soon should we expect the inevitable "special guest star" appearances?

Well, before anyone goes courting Lisa Kudrow (who'd be better served here than on that Father of the Pride), let's give the guy a chance. After all, we love LeBlanc. And he did score a few Emmy nominations over his 10 seasons as sweet, stupid sex-savant Joey Tribbiani. This might actually work.

Not that he won't need help. Wisely, the opener pairs our transplant with The Sopranos' Drea de Matteo as his implanted hairdresser sister (though she needs more comedy and less edge) and the hilarious, underrated Paulo Costanzo (Road Trip) as her son, a mojo-less rocket scientist who's the perfect foil for Joey's low-watt Casanova. There's also last-minute recast Andrea Anders tucked in the love-interest slot, but at this point, their chemistry is so wan, they'd be better off as just friends.

Which, when you think about it, is what this guy is best at anyway. We'll just have to see if he can make some that are as fun as the ones he left back in New York. — Damian J. Holbrook
